biography

Being born was my first performance. I was drawing before I could write, and I simply never stopped. For me, words have never been enough to express the intensity of existence. My first tools were sticks and clay, which evolved into brushes and electronic devices. Like me, they create and destroy, transform and transgress. I would like to take stardust and shape it into planets, but until that moment comes, I take waste and turn it into gold. I take pain and transform it into love.

GENEVIÈVE FORTIN

(SHE/HER)

Repentigny

Artist

biography

Geneviève Fortin is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, and performer whose practice draws on lived experience, rebellion, and solidarity. With a degree in social work and currently serving as Communications Manager at the Institut universitaire sur les dépendances, she combines artistic engagement and social activism with a clear-sighted and fiercely independent spirit.

From incarceration to personal rebuilding, her story lives through her creations, shaping a practice in which art becomes a means of expression. She transforms stigma into raw material, silence into stories, and embraces art as a tool for liberation. Co-founder and Vice-President of the “Art Entr’Elles” collective, she advocates for the full recognition of the voices of criminalized women in artistic and social spaces.

Her work has been exhibited (AGIR / ART DES FEMMES EN PRISON), performed (Combat contre la langue de bois), and published in Des deux côtés de la prison. In this first book, she retraces her life journey while offering a critical perspective on the prison system and exploring community art as a catalyst for personal and social transformation. In each creation, Geneviève Fortin questions systems of exclusion, challenges dominant narratives, and transforms the personal into a manifesto.

Artwork

  • Corde vocal : This work is structured around a narrative triptych consisting of two photographs and a rope placed on a pedestal. The first image captures a moment of helplessness and rage in detention: the body is bound, the voice silenced. The second, taken five years later, shows the same rope, intact but untied, symbolizing a journey toward reclaiming oneself.

Presented alongside the photographs, the physical rope becomes a tangible memory. It connects the past to the present, confinement to liberation. This material, which once symbolized oppression, now becomes a trace of resistance and transformation.

Vocal cord, yes, but also a sensitive chord. The one we extend, pull, and tighten. The one we finally listen to. The one that still resonates, even after the rupture.

biography

I have always had a close relationship with the arts, particularly music and theatre. I hold a BA in Literature. For the past 10 years, I have been a visual artist, working primarily with watercolour. Creating an artwork is not an end in itself for me. Rather, I am interested in the creative process as a means of building self-confidence, creating different and more hopeful narratives, and supporting people living with HIV.

Through my artistic practice, I aim to generate financial resources to develop initiatives through which women and men living with HIV can reclaim their voices and step out of invisibility, but above all, challenge stigma through speaking out and intercommunity action.

Beyond using art as an expression of cultural creativity among people living with HIV, I have also turned to artistic creation as a way to free myself from substance use. It is therefore important to me that, through their imperfections, my works can highlight that substance use is much more complex than what the media and opinion-makers would have us believe. In short, my artistic practice addresses both everyday realities and the spiritual work involved in finding a harmonious connection with society.

biography

From a young age, I have always had a very creative mind. Over the years, various artistic mediums have allowed me to express myself and channel my emotions. Although I don’t have much technical training, the desire to create comes to me in waves, and the artistic process is very healing for me, helping me get through difficult periods. I have often created works when someone close to me died of an overdose or during heartbreaking breakups. It is a form of expression that I have returned to in recent years, after completely losing touch with it and abandoning it while I was using substances.

LA GID

CHAIRE DE RECHERCHE SUR LE GENRE ET L'INTERVENTION EN DÉPENDANCE

Longueuil

Artist

biography

Based at the Longueuil Campus of the Université de Sherbrooke, La GID has been conducting various participatory research projects since 2018 aimed at improving addiction services in Quebec and reducing the stigma and marginalization experienced by people with lived experience of substance use. Several of our projects incorporate creative activities that help recognize and value the experiential knowledge of people affected by substance use. In particular, as part of a La GID research project aimed at improving services for young adults experiencing social precarity, a panel bringing together young people with diverse lived experiences participated in various creative activities with the research team between 2020 and 2023. These activities gave young people an opportunity to express themselves, make sense of the research findings through the lens of their own experiences, and share their own messages. These efforts led to the publication of a zine entitled La face cachée de la société, featuring the young participants’ creations (drawings and poems), as well as a series of photo-novel vignettes exploring the panelists’ experiences in relation to various themes that emerged from the research findings, such as stigma.

The zine also includes recommendations from the young participants on how to improve the services intended for them. The panelists then organized and hosted a zine launch event. They also took part in outreach activities with people experiencing social precarity and with community organizations. In parallel, recommendations made by the panelists were incorporated into a research report based on the key messages shared in the zine, with the young people credited for these ideas.

LE FOULOSOPHE NIC

(HE/HIM)

Sherbrooke

Artist

biography

I am the multidisciplinary artivist, the foulosophe Nic, an engaged foulosophe who denounces all forms of alienation through the arts I practice. I use art therapy to transform my difficult past while bringing it to life through user-trainer projects in the arts, as it is the best fuel I know for transforming my emotional roller coaster, helping me grow through my dreams, and moving toward recovery. There are several artists within me: poet, engaged foulosophe, punk, eco-humanist, ecosopher, environmentalist, painter, photographer, and musician. My art revolves around mental health and the various forms of alienation in this crazy world.

Substance Use, Mental Health

Artwork

I am also a visual artist and, just like in music, I am an “omni” (unidentified musical object). My visual works are “weapons of mass illustration,” and most of them focus on mental health and its forms of alienation. I create outsider art, and my style can be biting, sublime, and sometimes downright acidic. The Foulosophe Nic would like to emphasize that art saved his life. Through art therapy, he built a backbone that helped him overcome 15 years of addiction to drugs and alcohol. In July 2025, it will have been 16 years since he changed his life from A to Z, while his creativity has remained exploratory and worthy of an extraordinary kind of madness.

MORNO

Montreal

Artist

biography

Morno, born in 1971 in Montreal, is the artistic pseudonym of Caroline Morneau. A graduate of the visual arts program at Cégep Lionel-Groulx in Sainte-Thérèse, she initially worked as a scenic painter. For seven years, she created special effects for television and film sets, as well as faux finishes for public spaces and private residences.

The pictorial techniques she learned during those years now inform the development of her own artistic practice. Morno paints series of abstract and figurative works, striving to distinguish herself through a unique brushstroke. Influenced by the Automatistes, particularly Paul-Émile Borduas, she has participated in numerous live painting events. Her work has been exhibited in Montreal and the surrounding area, as well as in Paris.

This artwork was created by eight people (Mélanie Arrelle, Emmanuel Boucher, Lucie Décoste, Caroline Favreau, Annie Rainville, André Roy, Mélodie Talbot, and Jessica Tremblay) with lived experience rooted in the community sector. Together, we wanted to express the invisible—the emotions we experience as marginalized people, sometimes pushed aside by society. The structure was created by Jessica Tremblay, and we filled it together, becoming one.

biography

54yr old of Ontario James Bay cree heritage. I did not live on our territory or practice cultural ways until later in life. My lived experience is not necessarily an easy one. It has many of the same characteristics of our people. Effects of lateral violence and intergenerational trauma being a reality. It includes ten consecutive years in custody of corrections Canada.

While incarceretad, I immersed myself in my culture. I’ve been following the red road healing journey for 15 years. Giving back what was given to me by elders and knowledge keepers. Working in Montreal since April 2020 as outreach/intervention worker for Indigenous homeless. The work I do is grounded in lived experience, the wisdom of the seven teachings an academic studies. I connect with Indigenous people in situations of homelessness, build meaningful relationships, and innovate solutions within the Indigenous Street Community.

My role as outreach worker is to increase the quality of life of Indigenous people experiencing homelessness by meeting them “where they are at.” This applies to geographical location in the streets and from a harm reduction perspective to support safer substance use and access to physical, emotional and cultural health resources. I am a writer and regularly do speaking engagements in schools and organizations.

Indigenous crafts are essential to my well being. Today people call it « art therapy »…we say « good medicine ». I work with all elements.

Quoraly

(Elle)

Montreal

Artist

biography

I am a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is deeply connected to a journey of reclaiming power over my body and my life. Abstinence has been a form of grounding for me, a return to presence. My work emerges from this movement: a creative impulse directed toward vitality, sensuality, and the plurality of ways of being.

I am interested in what grows, what persists, and what overflows. My creations offer a tender attention to life in all its forms—whether queer, unruly, or uncategorizable.

Substance Use, Mental Health

Artwork

  • Peaux et spores : My creations are inspired by the organic world, particularly fruits and mushrooms. I use fruits for their symbolic significance—they are sensual and carnal, while also evoking a certain sense of sexual freedom. Their diversity of shapes and sizes allows me to explore the plurality of bodies and desires beyond conventional norms.

Mushrooms fascinate me because of their unconventional nature: neither plants nor animals, they escape binary classifications. They emerge at the margins, reappear on bodies in transformation, embodying the ideas of regeneration, otherness, and continuity within decomposition.

They are forms of life that tell stories differently: somewhere between the erotic, the queer, and the living.

Québec

Artist

biography

I am an emerging artist from Quebec City who, at times, tries to create a world that is sometimes a little more absurd, sometimes a little softer.

Whether through workshops with women who have been released from prison or from the comfort of my small apartment in Saint-Sauveur, I create in the hope of connecting first with myself, but also with as many people as possible.

In keeping with the event’s theme, “Expressing the Invisible,” the artists were invited to delve into their wildest and most absurd dreams, bringing their inner gardens—where hope blooms—to life on canvas through collage, painting, writing, or even drawing. It is, admittedly, a rather intimate theme.
